The transport of dangerous goods (TDG) is carried out by road (ADR), rail (RID), inland waterway (ADN), sea (IMDG) or air (IATA). The TDG regulations aim to prevent risks to people, goods and the environment during this critical phase of the transport of dangerous goods. For the transport of infectious substances (class 6.2), there are guidelines for the packaging to be used to ensure safe shipment, and the Biotainer range of packaging is one of the packaging approved specifically for the transport of infectious specimens.

E3 Cortex is your specialist in the design and manufacture of specific and customised or standard packaging. Thanks to a careful study of all the characteristics of your hazardous products, we can assist you in choosing the best packaging and shipping solutions to guarantee an optimised and regulatory supply chain.

Our careful analysis, our experience in the field and our knowledge of the regulations in force enable us to always offer the most suitable packaging. On this page, the Biotainer range, with several variations ranging from 0.25L to 12L of internal capacity of the secondary container, is the solution for your shipments, at room temperature or controlled temperature (if you combine the Biotainer kit with an isothermal Overpack), of your infectious or potentially infectious class 6.2 biological samples (UN codes 2814, 2900 or 3373).

E3 Cortex

Biotainer packaging for the transport of hazardous and biological goods in class 6.2.

Each dangerous good falls under one or more specific types of danger and has a so-called “UN number”. Infectious substances fall under class 6.2. The definition of an infectious substance is found in section 1.4 of the TDG Regulations.

Essentially, it is a substance containing viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi or other agents that can reasonably be expected to cause disease in humans or animals. Blood, tissues, organs, body fluids or cultures that contain pathogenic micro-organisms may also be considered infectious substances.

The packaging of infectious substances must therefore take all these contexts into account and be designed to minimise the risk of damage during transport. In addition, packaging serves to ensure the integrity of the material being transported and the timely and accurate processing of samples, which is what E3 Cortex offers with the Biotainer range of solutions.

Packagings for the transfer of infectious substances in Class 6.2 must be made up of a triple packaging comprising four elements that are inseparable in their use, namely one or more leak-proof primary inner receptacles (not supplied), one or more leak-proof secondary receptacles capable of absorbing all the liquid contents of the primary receptacles, one or more leak-proof secondary receptacles capable of withstanding a differential pressure test of 95 kPa, and an outer packaging (insulated, where appropriate), all of which must be combined to form an approved triple packaging.

Infectious materials can then be transported either in cultures or in patient samples. The risk of infection is higher for cultures, due to high concentration of infectious materials, than for patient samples.

Find the Biotainer packaging that meets the requirements of the TDG regulations at E3 Cortex

E3 Cortex offers you a range of Biotainer packaging that fully complies with the requirements of the various international transport regulations: ADR for road shipments, IATA for air shipments, IMDG for sea shipments and RID for rail shipments. The 4GU approval allows the use of all types of inner receptacles (primary inner receptacles) such as sample tubes, swabs, petri dishes, sample bottles, slides, etc. They are packaging for the transport of infectious or potentially infectious biological samples at room temperature in accordance with UN packaging instructions.

Each Biotainer kit is ready to use and comes with a 6.2 hazard label and absorbent paper. Whether you are looking for a 0.25 litre, 1.8 litre or 12 litre Biotainer kit, we have plenty in stock and ready for delivery.

The Biotainer is suitable for the transport of all category A and category B infectious substances. Category A infectious substance are those which, in the manner in which they are transported, may, when exposure occurs, cause permanent disability or fatal or potentially fatal disease in humans or animals. Category B infectious substances can cause disease in humans or animals, but the conditions of transport are such that the probability of contracting the disease through exposure is extremely low. However, some infectious substances must still be sent as Category A, regardless of their form, because of their pathogenicity. The list of infectious substances classified as Category A can be found on the World Health Organisation (WHO) website, under the category "Transport of infectious substances".

If your infectious substances must be transported at controlled temperatures (+2C°/+8°C or -40C°), you must either use our Cryopack range designed specifically for these needs, or use an Overpack (a standard isothermal packaging with the mandatory Overpack markings).

At E3 Cortex you will always find the packaging solutions you need for the transportation of dangerous, fragile or heat sensitive products. With more than 30 years of experience with large chemical groups, laboratories, hospitals... we can offer a global approach to the packaging of hazardous products and their safe transport.
